There isn't one obvious answer here, and that's honestly the whole point of this page — the "closest" airport isn't automatically the best one for your specific trip. It depends on where you're flying from and whether you'd rather save 20 minutes of driving or save on the flight itself.
Sarasota-Bradenton International (SRQ) — the closest one
About 10-11 miles from the island, which works out to a 20-30 minute drive depending on where exactly you're staying. It's small, easy to navigate, and security lines are nothing like a major hub. The catch is that it's served by fewer airlines than the bigger airports nearby, so depending on where you're coming from, you might not find a direct flight, or it might cost more than flying into Tampa and driving the extra distance.
Tampa International (TPA) — the big hub
Roughly an hour to an hour and a half drive, and that time is more traffic-dependent than the drive from Fort Myers, since the route runs through more built-up areas. What you get in exchange is by far the widest selection of flights and airlines, and often better fares if you're flexible on which airport you land at.
Fort Myers / Southwest Florida International (RSW)
Similar drive time to Tampa, roughly an hour and a half, but the route itself is simpler and less affected by traffic. If you're coming from the west or south and the flight options line up, this one's worth comparing directly against Tampa rather than assuming Tampa wins by default.
The budget options: St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE) and Punta Gorda (PGD)
Both around an hour away, both served mainly by Allegiant, and both worth checking if you're flexible on dates — these tend to have the cheapest fares of the group, at the cost of fewer flight times to choose from.
So which one
- Want the easiest possible arrival and don't mind paying a bit more: SRQ.
- Chasing the cheapest fare and don't mind the longer drive: compare Tampa and Fort Myers directly — don't assume one is automatically cheaper or closer without checking both for your dates.
- Flying from far outside the US or need very specific nonstop routes: Orlando is worth a look too, even though it's the furthest at around 2-2.5 hours.
