None of this is the fun part of planning a trip, but it's the kind of thing that catches people off guard mid-stay if nobody mentions it first. If you're staying a week or more, especially in a rental with a kitchen, it's worth knowing before you arrive, not after your first Instacart order takes two hours longer than the app promised.
There's no big supermarket on the island
Siesta Key itself doesn't have a large supermarket. There are two smaller markets on the island — one in the Village, one in South Village — and they cover the basics fine for a normal beach day, but they're not where you want to do a full week's grocery run. For anything bigger, plan to shop before you cross onto the island, not after you've settled in.
Delivery works, but budget extra time
Walmart delivery does reach Siesta Key, along with Lido Key and Longboat Key. The catch is that drivers tend to avoid these orders when they can — the bridges create a real bottleneck, especially in high season, and a delivery that should take 20 minutes can easily eat an hour once someone's stuck in bridge traffic both ways. Someone will usually take the order eventually, just don't count on it arriving in the window the app first gives you.
Same story with Uber and Lyft
Rideshare drivers factor in exactly the same math — the fare doesn't scale with how long the trip actually takes once bridge traffic is involved, so plenty of drivers pass on pickups from the barrier islands during peak times. You'll usually still get a ride, it just might take longer to match with a driver than it would somewhere without a bridge in the way.
If you're relying on rideshare instead of a car, see our visiting without a car guide — the free trolley covers a lot of what you'd otherwise need a ride for, without the wait.
The honest takeaway
None of this is a reason to skip staying on the island — it's just the trade-off for being on a barrier island in a place that gets genuinely busy in high season. Planning your big grocery shop before you arrive, and giving deliveries and rideshares extra time during peak hours, covers most of it.
